History

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Marcus Garvey

At Locks Heath Junior School, we aim for children to gain a better knowledge and understanding of the world by understanding its past; children will realise that our understanding of the past is constructed from a vast variety of 'stories' about events that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Through an enquiry-based approach to learning, children will become passionate and inspired historians, who think critically, ask perceptive questions, weigh up arguments, look at stories from different perspectives and come to their own reasoned conclusions.

Geography

"The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map.  It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists actoss continents and in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together." President Barack Obama

Our geography lesson will inspire children to be curious to find out more about the wider world and its people, comparing this to their own experience in our local area.  This includes place and locational knowledge, human and physical environment, geographical skills, sustainable development and our environmental impact.

Design Technology

“I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” Thomas Edison

“An essential part of creativity, is not being afraid to fail” Dr Edwin Land

Our Design Technology curriculum is designed to prepare all children for a developing world and to become global citizens. Our curriculum encourages children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real life problems where children work both individually and as a team. All lessons have been adapted to ensure it meets the needs of SEND by providing scaffolding while also providing deeper thinking to challenge all pupils.

Music

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flights to the imagination and life to everything." Plato

"Where words fail, music speaks." Hans Christian Anderson

At Locks Heath Junior School, we aim to inspire a love of music and for the children to develop their own skills of musicianship so they can express their creativity: increase their self-confidence and sense of achievement. Through developing an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music, children will be able to engage critically with their own compositions and those of great composers and musicians.

Physical Education

“It doesn’t matter what your background or where you come from, if you have dreams and goals, that’s all that matters.” Serena Williams tennis player

“I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps, I’m the first Simone Biles.” Simone Biles, gymnast

At Locks Heath Junior School, we aim for children to gain a better knowledge and understanding of the importance of a healthy active lifestyle by participating in a wide range of activities.

Through both team and individual activities, children will become inspired and passionate sports people who can work well independently and as a team. They will persevere with challenge and learn how our bodies work to enable us to exercise and maintain our physical and mental health.

Art

“Creativity takes courage” Henry Matisse

“Inhale possibility, exhale creativity” Laura Jaworski

Art provides a space and time to learn in different ways to other areas of the curriculum.  It stimulates creativity and imagination.  It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world.
