‘Where Children Come First’

YEAR 5 HOME LEARNING

Below are a few details about Year 5 Home Learning. If you need any further help with what your child should be doing at home or how you can help, then please feel free to pop in and see us.

Spellings:

Spellings are handed out a Monday. The children sit a zone test on a Monday morning. The outcome of the zone test will determine what zone your child will be in for that week. Each week their zone might change depending how confident they are on a particular spelling rule/pattern. The children should be re-writing their list (using Look, Cover, Spell, Check) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday we test the children. In addition to this the children are given a spelling task that they must complete. The task is always linked to the spelling rule/pattern that we are learning. The spelling task is to be completed in their spellbinder alongside their spellings.

Reading:

The children have a group reading book (set by the teacher) that they bring home with set pages to read. They are expected to read at least 4 times a week. We encourage the children to read as often as possible (for 10-15minutes) to any willing listener! We ask that you record when they have read at home. They are also asked to complete a reading task which will usually link to the book that they are reading. If they are not set a reading task then they are expected to create their own. There are ideas in the front of their reading journal to help them to do this. We also use their reading journal as a communication book between school and home. Please feel free to record any other books/magazines/comics etc.. your child enjoys to read. The children also have access to a library book of their choice. They have an opportunity at least once a week to change this book.

Weekly Home Learning:

We set the same home learning across the year group. Home learning will usually be set on a Thursday and is due in on a Tuesday. If for any reason your child is unable to complete their home learning then please let their class teacher know. We ask that the children spend at least 30 minutes on this piece of homework. We ask that all home learning be completed using a HB pencil. If your child has achieved their scribe certificate then pen can be used (excluding Maths work). Whenever possible, we would like an adult to sign the piece of home learning and would welcome any comments regarding how your child found the task.

There are always links and guidance on our Wizkid page (Virtual Learning Environment!)
